About This Vehicle

Lot 001 · 1967 Amphicar Model 770 · Red

Survivor · Ready for the Next Chapter

Not every classic is meant to be admired from the driveway. This 1967 Amphicar Model 770, finished in its original red, was built by Hans Trippel’s Quandt Group in Lübeck, West Germany — the same engineering lineage that produced the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen for wartime amphibious operations. Production ran from 1961 to 1965, with the majority of roughly 4,000 examples destined for U.S. buyers.

The Vehicle

  • Make/Model: Amphicar 770 (the 770 designation reflects its 7 knots on water / 70 mph on road capability)
  • Engine: Triumph Herald 1147cc inline-four, ~43 HP — sharing lineage with the Triumph Spitfire, with parts and technical support well-supported through active owner networks and specialist suppliers
  • Drivetrain: Four-speed manual for road use, twin nylon propellers for marine
  • Paint & Body: Original paint retained. Original body panels and structure intact.
  • Interior: Original fabrics and upholstery in place; wear consistent with a preserved survivor
  • Convertible Top: Original, functional, showing honest age; a candidate for refresh when a future steward brings the car back to full concours

Provenance & Documentation

Presented as a preserved survivor with original paint, body, mechanicals, and interior. Additional documentation available from the seller upon request. Buyer is encouraged to arrange a personal inspection or a professional pre-purchase inspection at the vehicle’s location before bidding.

The Amphicar Community

Ownership includes entry into one of the most passionate communities in the collector world — the “Amphicar Guppies,” an active owners’ network that hosts “Swim-Ins” and events across the country year-round. Parts and technical support remain robust decades after production ended.

For Bidders

  • Sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS
  • Inspection appointments arranged directly with the seller before bidding
  • Standard BB&D 2% Buyer’s Premium applies
  • This is a 31 day Extended Listing

The Amphicar’s charm is its improbability — a vehicle that will absolutely draw a crowd wherever it goes, on the road or in the water. Serious inquiries welcomed.
